My Father's death
Father 94 male white 5-8 155lbs Parkinsons Dementia On several meds but its been a few years so...
This still haunts me. If this is the wrong place or I ask it wrong just delete it. My Father's parkinsons had deteriorated the muscles in his throat and he was having problems swallowing, and he would aspirate food/water and his last year had 3 cases of pneumonia. Each one I got him to the hospital and he kicked it in a couple days.
At the 3rd hospital, which was better than the other one they diagnosed aspiration pneumonia. the other hospital had no clue. he was on water chips and IV for a week and a half. he was able to stand and they were starting to get him to walk and working with him on swallowing, but no luck. We discussed a feeding tube and he wanted one surgically inserted instead of thru the nose.
tey said the procedure wnt fine and the feed was started slowly and seeing he tolerated it well they increased it. I last saw him awake dinnertime that same day. Got a call at 5am that he was in trouble. At some point he sarted getting fluid in his chest/lungs and they had to vacuum it out but they had trouble getting it so ...and Im shaky on this part...they had to use a stronger vacuum or something to try and clear his chest/lungs. All this came on so sudden and it put me in shock. When I reached the hospital My dad had a tube in his throat and he was breathing like a freight train. The nurse said he wasnt getting enough oxygen so was breathing as hard as he could. He was out and never came back.
I never asked and no one ever explained it. What does tis sound like? Did the feeding tube mess up and fluid was going into his lungs? Or was there some otherfluid going into his lungs. He lasted a few more hours then passed. I imagine he couldnt maintain oxygen and was just exhausted by the whole ordeal. I thought he was coming home and then the bottom just fell out. For his age my dad was strong. he had always had a good spirit.
I will say this about that hospital. The staff was excellent. They kept me informed. They took very good care of him and were always checking on him. They answered all of my questions and i call them his angels. As opposed to the other hospital he was in the doctors were awesome as well. I actually got to met and talk to them. A couple times they even called me to tell me what was going on.
Anyway, as you can tell very emotional. Thank you for reading.
