She sued him for slander, then they got married that year. What happened?
I've asked this on genealogy Twitter and Chicago genealogy Facebook, but I'm really dying to find some answers so I'm trying here as well.
I've been researching this couple, Tina Ascher and Abraham Burton. I know they were married in 1865 because of census records. They had their first child in April 1866. They went on to have 7 more children and were married for decades before they both died in the 1910s.
Then I found an article in the Chicago Tribune, 1865 about 17 year old Tena Ascher suing Abraham Burton for slander. Apparently, he was telling people they had "carnal relations," and she denied the claim and wanted nothing to do with him.
So how did they go from antagonism to getting married? I was told that Tina could not have filed the suit herself because she was a minor, so her parents must've done it for her. I'm hoping someone more familiar with the history at the time might have an educated guess.
My theory so far is that they had to get married to save her reputation, though it seemed like her suit against Abraham was successful, so wouldn't her reputation have been okay? I'm wondering if there might have been some assault or coercion involved.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
