How to properly stab enemies and the walls?

I have a hard time trying to stab enemies with daggers, and I'm using the sword Agony which has the ability to make spikes if you stab the wall, but I can never stab the wall the blade just pushes against it. Does anyone have tips or something on how I am supposed to do it?
