What is up with the recent authentication posts in the last day or two. Is this real?

New around here, but I guess I am a bit confused by the authentication process. I get the Roy jokes, but honestly what is the value in having this done? I know in coin collecting it costs money, so usually collectors only pay when it is “worth it” for their nice coins. Is this for artifacts that are purchased or for those you find? Any thoughts or comments are welcome. Thanks!
