El Campanil Theatre in Antioch celebrating 95 years
El Campanil first opened on Nov. 1, 1928, as a venue for vaudeville shows and movies. Among the performers who appeared at the theater were Roy Rogers, Debbie Reynolds, Mary Pickford, Sally Rand and Donald O’Connor. Crane doesn’t remember seeing anyone that famous but remembers lots of “handsome men and pretty women.”
The theater’s dressing rooms are adorned with hundreds of autographs from decades of local and national actors. Performers are still encouraged to sign the walls during shows. Some of the older signatures are covered in glass to keep them from getting ruined.
