A scam business stole all of my property years ago and I got it back recently. I now have years of evidence and I’m thirsty for blood and compensation. What sort of attorney do I need?
To keep it as short as possible: a scam moving company stole all of my property almost 2 years ago. They’ve attempted to extort me the entire time. The company in question wasn’t even trying to hide the fact that what they were doing was illegal and deceptive. They acted as if the law did not apply to them because they knew nobody was going to enforce it. The company was incredibly brazen and sloppy, to the degree that I would send them verbatim what the FMSCA and DOT regulations were and they’d effectively tell me “I don’t give a shit. What are you going to do about it?”. They didn’t think I’d, not only hold out against them for years, but take them through court as well. We’ve been in court for ages and they’ve been dragging it out. I found out they let the storage unit that my property was being held in accrue a delinquent balance. They were letting the storage warehouse auction my property off while still going to court and acting like they planned on keeping my property. I managed to win the auction, and we’re almost positive they were intentionally bidding just to raise the price (I plan to subpoena the auction records to see who put the insanely high bids down). After I won, the moving company owner called the warehouse and tried to pay his debt in order to retain his right to the property, but I’d already paid so it was mine. The guy went ballistic and claimed he had “very important personal items in there” and said “they can’t sell HIS property”. Insane.
Anyways there’s the most recent back story. I have tons of evidence in the form of emails where they blatantly disregard the law and FMCSA regulations, even when confronted with it. I have tons of evidence in the form of witnesses who have unfortunately been dragged into this. Tons of bait and switch situations in writing where they promised to give my my property for X amount, and then right before delivery they demand 10x the amount. They disregard the contract and law flagrantly. They lied about the physical location of my property, forcing me to waste an insane amount of time and money (I.e I’m paying for an attorney in one of the largest cities in the US because I was told my property was in this jurisdiction, but it’s actually in a very small city where the cost of an attorney is 1/6 what I’m paying now). My current attorneys can attest to how unreasonable they are in court, refusing any and all negotiations even if they’re almost entirely weighted in THEIR favor. I can now show the court they were willing to take a loss and walk away with no money, instead of taking my money in negotiations, just to spite me. On top of all of this, everything of value is missing. All of the artwork I bought/commissioned, my music equipment, kitchen tools, an incredibly expensive PC I built and several laptops, my bike, and more. I packaged all of my property very meticulously and they clearly rifled through everything and took whatever could be easily sold. All of the furniture that’s left is broken and damaged. To add insult to injury, they threw out all of my childhood memorabilia and sentimental belongings. I have no documentation or physical memories of the first 25 years of my life. I’m going to spend the next while grieving this loss, but then I plan to go after them with unbridled vengeance now that they can’t hold anything over my head anymore.
Obviously this treads the line between civil and criminal law. But I’m out for money and blood. They stole several years of my life from me and many, many tens of thousands of dollars. My entire life was put on hold and I’ve been wallowing in a deep depression since this started. I’ll never be able to get the priceless and one-of-a-kind items back. I want to say the next best thing is money, but it’d be half-hearted, because I really just want my belongings back. But money will suffice for now.
What sort of attorney would I be looking for? I’d love to retain my current counsel but I’m done stressing over paying insanely high bills. I need contingency basis and possibly a federal attorney (or so I’m told?). Am I looking for contract attorney? Business malpractice attorney? Consumer fraud and deception? I’m finding there are so many different types of attorneys and I’m not sure what the best path to pursue is.
Thanks for any direction and advice!
