Red Dot vs Iron Sights for newbie?

Would you recommend a newbie to the AR15 platform start out with a pair of iron sights prior to adding a Red Dot? Is there any benefit to doing so instead of just starting with a red dot (or even a scope for that matter) from the jump? TIA
