I cry BS on the 17,000,000+ members

I know WAAAAY too many "ex-mormons" who can't be bothered to expend the time and energy to offically resign. They personally quit, that settles it.

"It's all nonsensical bullshit and I haven't been to church in years. Oh, and I'm definitely not a Mormon anymore."

Mostly because they just don't give a damn, as the mormon religion is SOOOO far down their list of life's priorities.
