It’s about the photographer, not the camera.

Discussion

A great number of the photography posts here ask about which camera to buy, which software to use, which lens is best, etc. Very very few of them actually discuss photography itself. Please remember that photography has very little to do with the camera. The camera is merely a recording device and is only as good as what you put in front of it. If you can’t see/understand light or composition, the most expensive camera in the world won’t help you. Conversely, the world’s greatest photographers can take a picture of a dog taking a crap using a pinhole camera and it will be high art. There is a story about virtuoso violinist Itzhak Perlman who, after being told after a concert that “your violin sounded great tonight”, put his ear to his instrument and said “funny, I don’t hear anything”. It is Perlman that’s making the music, not the violin. If you are a master violinist, then a Stradivarius will further enhance your talent and sound. If you take beautiful pictures, then the “best quality” camera/lenses will enhance your images, but you must start out with a good eye first. What does all this mean? It means, take whatever camera you have and go take pictures. Consider light/time of day, composition, interesting subjects, and new perspectives. Play with your camera. Get to know what it can and can’t do. Then, if you find that the lens that you have does not match your vision, then you can begin to play with focal length. Above all, learn how to see both by taking lots of pictures, and also looking at the images of photographers whose work you admire. If you have potential as a photographer, you’ll take good pictures regardless of the camera. The camera is just a tool like any other. YOU take the pictures, not the camera.
