Is signing a contract the norm?

Seeking Advice

I have been hired to work in a specialists office. The physician sent me an employee agreement to sign but to me it’s much more like a contract. One of the stipulations is that I am required to give 6 weeks notice should I choose to resign. This was never discussed at the interview and I definitely cannot agree to that! Things happen in life and although ideally I’d give lots of notice if I need to resign, I’m not comfortable signing a documenting saying I will give 6 weeks. Is this the norm? Did anyone else need to sign an “employee agreement” like this when working for a drs office? I’m wondering how to tell the dr I don’t want to sign it without risking losing the opportunity.

Thanks everyone. I had it taken out. I hope it isn’t a sign of a negative work culture. We will see.
