Updates on severe weather for today, 4/4.
Edit 8:10pm:
We have been downgraded to Enhanced threat level (3/5). Storms are less likely to be isolated based on current trends which means less risk of standalone supercells. We are still likely to have severe weather later, a risk of tornados included. It seems like this line of storms will move through the area late, after midnight.
Edit 7:03pm:
Storms in central Iowa moving NE, we may be seeing the same thing in a couple hours.
Edit 5:08pm:
Just a waiting game at this point! At some point in the next couple of hours we will be entering the period where parameters are most concerning for severe weather as the warm moist air from the south continues moving north.
Edit 2:53pm:
Tornado watch issued for our area until 10pm.
Edit 2:06pm:
Storm Prediction Center has released a discussion showing that a tornado watch will be issued for the area in the next 2 hours. Storms expected to initiate around 5pm and track across the area during the evening hours.
Edit 11:36am:
Current guidance suggests storms may track southeast of us from 3-5pm and may develop west and move into the area from 5-7pm. However, confidence is still low and storms should be expected any time between 2pm and midnight, but especially after 5pm.
Currently we are under a moderate risk (4/5) for severe weather, the NWS currently expects this timeline:
Round 1: 2-6pm
Storms are unlikely during this time, but possible. Any storms that form during this time could drop hail and strong tornados.
Round 2: 6pm-12am
Storms will be more widespread during this time, but still scattered. This is the most dangerous time period for us today, conditions will be favorable for any storm that forms to drop strong to violent tornados. Storms will be fast moving at 50-60 mph.
Round 3: 12am - 6am?
There is some uncertainty in the timeline here, but at some point a line of storms will likely form and pass through the area. The main threats of this line will be strong winds and possibly a tornado or two.
Since there is so much uncertainty with this event, awareness more than anything will be important! Stay on your toes. Updates will follow as the Storm Prediction Center and National Weather Service release more predictions and information throughout the day.
