Has there ever been serious consideration of a Jamaica-Flushing rail link?

Question

I think it would help with intra-borough connectivity by connecting two major rail hubs, with the theoretical Interborough Express providing the other crucial link between Jackson Heights and Broadway Junction.

I suppose it could run along the Van Wyck, or perhaps a crazier idea of a light rail running in the median of Main Street through Kew Gardens Hills.

Hell no. Do you even live here? They removed lanes just to have more sidewalk space. There isn't any room to run a light rail down Main, even the buses have issues.

What do you mean just to have more sidewalk space? Clearly there was poor land use. Main street sidewalks are crazy congested and with all the space given to an order of magnitude fewer cars than people on the side walk it was ridiculous to maintain that ratio of space for cars to space of people

Main St gets congested but they are doing what they always did. Set up pop up shops on congested sidewalks that at one point, wasn't allowed. Even the street vendors that sold food couldn't be on there. Now we lost some good street carts to other areas just to have the sidewalks full of nonsense. Fewer cars is hyperbole. You know how many times the bus has to drive around 2 lanes of turning cars? If it's not congested in one spot, it will be in another. It's been a no win shit show in Flushing, I know, I traverse the crap for years. Let's also add the walk up shops that has people waiting for their food, I thought those food courts that opened was enough. Cars are the least of the problems.

Especially modern EL

Where did you plan to run an elevated structure on the hills we have here? No space for the stations either, much less ADA access.

Too bad

There used to be trolley lines which connected them, but heavy rail requires a much larger concentration of riders. Light rail might work today.

Lol faster buses do the same thing

We have the Q44 SBS and Q20 running via Main and Q25, Q34 and Q65 running via Kissena. Do we really need a rail link at this point?

Maybe not, unless there is commitment to get SBS up to real BRT standards

That seems better than trams

Near impossible with the traffic Main gets. Adding LRV is gonna completely hurt Main. They had issues as is when they added bus only lanes. Blame the developers for allowing more and more condos to be built in place of smaller family homes. The density is crazy.

The density is exactly why there should be light rail in the form of a tramway. The Q44 and Bx12 are probably the biggest candidates to turn into tramways in NYC.

Why not modern EL?

The Q65 uses 164th Street

Main-Mongoose3804:8:•

So? It's only until Hillside. Before Hillside, Q25/34 already has Parsons, Q20A/B and Q44 has Main St. Six buses that all take you from Downtown Flushing to the same area of Jamaica. The stretch is pretty covered. The bus redesign does want to mess with all of this, but until those changes happen...

Imagine the AirTrain made local stops while being extended to LGA, Harlem, and Flushing

Practical_Hospital40:s:•

An Astoria line extension can do it

2
Practical_Hospital40:s:•

Why do so many keep suggesting street running garbage that requires a new fleet and subject to the same traffic as buses and call it rail?

2
Practical_Hospital40:s:•

A branch of the queens blvd local or new crosstown line with modern EL design can pull it off

1
Practical_Hospital40:s:•

Why light rail? It’s not exactly cheaper than a subway EL extension especially with today’s costs . Build proper crosstown lines even if you build it as a branch off of the Jamaica line or Jamaica yard tracks from the queens blvd local. Just speed up buses

Main-Mongoose3804:8:•

You cannot have an El in Flushing, the mountain terrain will make it impossible and just getting up there would be annoying if Woodside has anything to say about it. Continuing the subway is another story, you'd have to rebuild one end of the station and I don't think it's even deep enough with all the basements adjoining the subway.

Practical_Hospital40:s:•

Go underground or extend the 7 enough of the excuses. Extend the busway and call it a day.

1
Main-Mongoose3804:8:•

As I mentioned, it's impossible to extend the 7 without a rebuild considering the way they rebuilt the stub end and put escalators in the way. Both sides of the subway has basements from adjoining places. It's not going to be easy or cheap. Excuses aren't excuses if they are facts. Living here probably longer then the people assuming how easy it is here, I know what I'm talking about. There is very little room to add anything in because they were shortsighted, blame them, not me.

Use another line from QBL then or a future northern blvd service or a separate crosstown line like Vancouver sky train with R211/179
