When I was discussing how great and underrated DSOTM is with my friend he mentioned "The Turning Point". As I couldn't recall it, we had a discussion whether it's real or not. Did anyone else have a similar situation?

I would never do such a thing - I couldn't be bothered spelling the full 16 words!

As a Scotsman myself, the lyrics resonate very much with me.

Did you actually understand the scots prose there? That's some heavy accent. I got some of it. Sounds awesome though. šŸ˜Ž

FradonRecordsEchoes•

It was more of a memey comment haha!

I can understand some of the words but not all of it - scots prose is spoken commonly down at Edinburgh/Perth area (just so happens to be where my Dad's family is from, which I suppose is why I can understand a bit more of it)

There isnt a song on DSOTM called the turning point. Also DSOTM is not underrated. Its sold about 50 million copies worldwide and spent about 900 weeks on the billboard album charts since release.

Are you not able to put together a serious sentence of words to express yourself?

(Logical quibble) high sales doesn't prove that it's not underrated. Underrated means "not rated as highly as it should have been." So, who knows.

Especially given that sales do not mean much. Even Rumours and Back in Black have sold similar, if not higher numbers. But they are barely in the same league as DSOTM.

antibendystraw•

I might get downvoted to hell for this in this sub but who cares. I can’t speak on back in black but imo it’s a little unfair to say Rumours is barely in the same league. Hard to make comparisons with such different genres but holy hell if you actually get into the music theory of Rumours or that era of Fleetwood Mac overall, it is very impressive from a technical standpoint. Lindsey was on one during that album but the combined musicianship of the songwriters between Christine, Stevie and Lindsey is next level. I don’t have to get so into it, but I feel like just because it’s a pop sound makes it an easy target to dismiss what they were able to achieve.

With that said DSOTM and even The Wall I would put above in my personal rankings, because of personal tastes. but the bands were in completely different lanes and aiming for different ends. And overall their execution of those ideas I would say are at least on par with each other.

Okay, my above comment makes it seem like I'm dismissing Rumours. I'm not. I'm sorry for dragging Rumours into this, I was trying to articulate that high sales doesn't always mean much. But yes, different artists, different genre. Not a fair comparison. Sorry about that.

antibendystraw•

Oh no you’re good lol! I’ve been revisiting and doing analysis on Fleetwood Mac lately so it’s fresh on my mind and wanted to make a case for them. I think your point of sales not being reflective of quality is absolutely on point.

1
Lumpy_Satisfaction18•

Okay, so those albums are overrated then.

2
richard-hill71•

"Sales do not mean much". What a stupid thing to say. Sales is a measure of popularity. The more people like the music the more people buy it. If it was underrated less people would buy it. DSOTM is one of the best sellers of all time and is still selling otherwise they wouldn’t be releasing new improved versions. People are still buying because its rated highly.

arctictrav•

Well, yeah I'm stupid.

Yes, high sales mean highly popular.

But it doesn't necessarily mean highly rated.

1
richard-hill71•

If its highly popular it must be highly rated by the buying public who are the ones that matter. If it wasn’t highly rated it wouldn’t sell. In the case of DSOTM, 50 million people rated it high enough to buy it. People are still buying it now because its highly rated.

Same tbh, I always thought there were just 11 songs on the Album until later I realized that there was the song "Echoed" between Money and Us and Them. I guess when a song is surrounded by masterpieces you kind of forget about it.

Yeah Echoed is really good. Severely underrated.

The Whole Album is really good, the line "All in all you're just another stick in the fence" is an earworm in my head.

You've seriously never heard Echoed? I'm glad I'm not the only one lol. It's really good, as good as any song from Border (The Album not the track)

DSOTM ā€œunderratedā€? That’s ridiculous it’s one of the most loved and talked about rock albums of all time.

5
DrCringio44•

Are you sure? I've never heard anyone talk about it, it's usually The Wall and The Final Cut that are talked about (I mean they are the best, Roger really did great on those)

2
Happy_Television_501•

I’m an older PF fan - not that old, but I was born six months after DSOTM came out (my dad always tells me that the album was playing pretty much the whole time I was in the womb, haha). Started listening to PF by myself in my teens and while every new PF album I discovered was my favorite for a while, DSOTM always eventually reclaimed the #1 spot and it’s been that way for most fans I’ve talked to.

The Wall is exceptional in that it seems that everyone had a deep, deep affair with that record at some point, and listened to it SO MUCH that they have almost burned out on it now and don’t listen to it as much. It doesn’t have the sonic depth and texture that DSOTM moon has to get lost in, it’s all right out front and so very Roger, it’s never been a ā€˜living room vibe’ kind of record.

1

I'm not sure you could accurately use "underrated" to describe DSOTM.
