Looking for a Netflix anime recommendation based on what I have watched so far...

Fairly new to Anime and not sure what to watch next. So far I have enjoyed:

  • Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
  • Samurai Champloo
  • Samurai 7
  • Code Geass
  • Canaan

I'm looking for something that at least has 1 season on Netflix because I'm just never going to get out and actually buy something on chance when there are a bunch to sample on Netflix. I appreciate your help, but please base your suggestions off of the short list I gave and not just what you like.

I'd like to give more specifics but I'm not even sure what characteristic these anime's have that I like vs others that I didn't like. I definitely need it to have some sort of serious storyline and not just a comedy. I like them to at least border on the darker side.

EDIT: formatting.

All of Blood + is on Netflix, that is a pretty engaging series.

Also you didnt list these so if you havent seen them then SHAME.

Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and FLCL.

Trigun and FLCL are on my queue actually. I am waiting for my cousin to lend me Cowboy Bebop. I have to be honest though, I watched a couple episodes of Trigun, but it didn't really capture me the way I was hoping. I'll give it another shot though, thanks!

Yes, keep watching Trigun. I didn't like it at first, and dropped it, but a friend kept bugging me about it, and so I started it over again. It is now one of my favorite anime of all time.

I'll definitely keep going with it then. I didn't dislike it, it just didnt particularly grab me in the first couple of episodes.

Right, I gotcha. The only anime I have actually ever dropped is Naruto and Peach Girl. Peach Girl was just far too horrible...

haha just went to add Blood+ to my queue and realized it was already on there. I guess I should just go through my queue first!

I love Samurai Champloo! A couple I have watched on Netflix are: Corpse Princess, Claymore, and High School of the Dead. Those are the best so far, I've also watched Sekirei which is just sort of fun, same with Chobits. I'll also mention that I see Darker Than Black mentioned a lot, but I wasn't able to get into it. And lastly I'll mention Kaze No Stigma - it's pretty awesome, haven't finished it yet though.

Kaze no stigma was good at first. kinda like a more mature avatar the last air bender but then it turned into a shity incest rape love story .

Thanks! Out of the first three you mentioned, could you briefly tell me what you liked about them? Was it the story-line, characters, humor, a mix of all? Samurai Champloo surprised me. I started watching it and thought it was entertaining but nothing great. As it went on, I liked it more and more. By the end, I was sad it was over!

Corpse Princess has a great episodic feel to it while maintaining its forward story. We have a classic nobody who finds out he's connected to something bigger and rises to the challenge, decent characters, great action. Give it 3 episodes to see how you feel.

Claymore is hard to describe, easily a good one for some satisfactory action. Main character has the story of "cold hard killer" learns to love. Lol.

High School of the Dead got me purely on art style and production value... ie - it's very pretty. The first episode though, beyond that, WILL rope you in to the story. I'm not a big fan of the zombie genre, but something about presenting it in anime made it better for me. Also I loved the characters, very diverse set, and an admirable main character with a small on-the-side love story. I think it must be fairly new because there is only one season, and I can't imagine it having been cancelled.... here's to hoping.

Claymore's not on netflix anymore. (too bad if you ask me)

I give you the obligatory Death Note recommendation. Best series by far!

not on Netflix though? Or am I searching wrong?

Huh... it was there like a week ago. But that is BY FAR my favorite series. It is on Hulu though.

I'll have to watch it on Hulu then, thanks!

Can't go wrong with Darker Than Black and Full Metal Panic.

Definitely recommend you give Darker Than Black a shot. Main character fits the anti-hero archetype. The story will have you interested and the fight scenes are good. The pacing is a little slow so if you need a show with nonstop action, it may be a little bit difficult to get into.

Thanks. I think Darker Than Black will be my next viewing. It's on my queue already and I started it the other night. I was half-asleep on the couch though so I didn't make it through the episode. That wasn't definitely my state of mind and not he anime though. This sounds like what I am looking for. Thanks!

-Gungrave was pretty enjoyable. The real story itself starts episode 2 though.

-Pumkin scissors

-Kaze no Stigma (although the author passed on, so the ending's kind of meh. Still a great series overall)

-Angel Beats

-FLCL

-Trigun

-Full Metal Panic! + Fumoffu

-Mushishi isn't an action, but it's still a great piece of work and could help expose you to more of the genre I guess.

-Elfen Lied is a pretty good one, the first episode has a bit of gore though. It tones down starting ep2 though.

-And if you're feeling like you want to step out of the shounen zone, watch Baka and Test. It's a ridiculous comedy I laughed my ass off at.

Great list! Thanks. I did watch an episode of Mushishi and enjoyed it. I will definitely get back to it at some point.
