Wolverine MAX #1?

I noticed a dearth of reviews online about this book when it came out last week. Anyone else read it? What'd you think? Are you as glad as I am that such an obscure character finally got a chance in the spotlight?

Kidding aside, let's hear thoughts!

Flipped through it at the store. Saw a regular Wolverine comic with the word "fuck" in it a few times, that's it.

Nothing to write home about.

I was looking forward to this for a while. Picked it up, and I thought it was fine. It felt to me like it was really highlighting that it was a MAX book by saying "fuck" for fuck's sake. I'm interested to see how it progresses, but I'm not expecting greatness.

I think the "Fuck" thing stands out more because those first few pages are so sparse on dialogue, but you're right, it's sort of awkward.

I'm interested in the idea of a story that isn't mired down by his connections with other mutants and with Xavier's cause, myself, and I think starting it off in Japan right away's a good idea.

Exactly. Other MAX books use it as part of a dialogue and it fits really well. This one just had it hanging there. It was a little weird. The premise sounded really awesome to me. I'll stick with it for a while.

I really enjoyed punisher max as it was one of the first full series I had read. It pretty much got me interested in going to the comic book store every wed. So when I see a Max series come out I pretty much pick it up. I've always wanted to follow a Wolverine story but I feel left out not starting things from issue #1. Aside from these reasons it is a solid book that has wolverine in a mature setting, which in my opinion is where he belongs.

See, I'm actually unfamiliar with the other MAX books--I'm aware of them, but I haven't gotten around to reading them at all yet, so I don't know how well this single issue holds up to an issue of any of those, which is part of why I wanted to see what the subreddit's perspective was. I personally thought the story was okay, if a bit light.

I'm also not sure how I feel about the change in art style during the flash back sequences.

I understand why the story might seem light. It is trying to draw a audience that might not know anything of wolverine. Each MAX story is a little bit different, none have really stacked up to the Punished imo. I don't think you can really compare issues based on just reading the first issue. I guess im trying to say is the MAX series has yet to let me down so i think any series is worth picking up. Especially a bigger name like wolverine.

I picked it up, I wasn't particularly pleased. I've never read a Max book, is it supposed to be out of continuity? Because I don't see how a shark bit through adamantium. It was kinda like Wolverine goes Jason Bourne.

The only parts I really did like were the flashback scenes. I really enjoy the artist that did those, it reminds me of old school indie books.

his fucking biggest adversary in the issue was a shark. Seriously, a fucking shark. It ate his legs, fuck.

That wasn't really an adversary though, it was a plot device to establish his healing factor. I think it highlights the weak point of the book though; while it foreshadows Victor Creed, it doesn't provide the character or the story with a clear sense of direction from the start.

and the incredibly awkward F-bombs.

So, you didn't like it, then?

His legs were actually cut off during the plane crash, according to the detective. Sharks don't like the taste of adamantium.

Dearth? Here's 7 from popular review sites.

Personally, thought it was rather bland and didn't tap into the differentiator that MAX books can be. We've seen stories like this before, there's no need to repeat it.

Weird, I checked CBR last week, and couldn't find it...the other sites I don't generally frequent. Sorry.

No worries. Still plan on checking it out after reading reviews?

I actually checked it out already, I was just interested to see what other folks thought.

Pretty boring IMHO.

I thought the plot was fairly boring, and I didn't like the flashback art.

It's horrid. Awesome cover, but the interior is rotting week old garbage. Stay far away.
