I'm Copper III, why am I going up against Gold rank?
Doesn't seem fair.

So the golds can rank up
There are not many players in Copper, relative to Gold. Statistically you'll have gold players in your lobbies if it's struggling to find others at your level.
That said, it's SBMM, so the system thinks you're on or close to the same skill level as the other players. Even if you lose, if you've played well against better opponents, you can get points until the system considers your rank more or less equal to your skill level.
Additionally, lots of players are in higher ranks than their skill level should allow due to the recent issue where there were no penalties for abandoning a losing match. So it's possible they've cheesed their way to a higher rank than they ought to be in and they really are closer to your skill level.
Ultimately, don't fuss too much over ranks, they're not always indicative of a players skill. You just play the match you're given to the best of your abilities.
Trials is more competitive than competitive
Copper⁉️
Competitive does not use your rank for matchmaking, but uses skill-based matchmaking
So people ranked in higher tiers are the same skill level as I am? Then why am I not ranked Gold or they ranked Copper?
It's very confusing.
The ranking is just a number with zero meaning. And because the population is so low every other game in higher skilled console games are still filled with mouse and keyboards even after the recent "ban." Don't get your hopes up for this mode.
Yeah it's a garbage ranking implementation, I gave up trying to hit Plat for Glorious
So many games have zero problem with their rankings, I have no clue why this one is such crap. I'm an average competitive player in general and always have been, I'm not expecting to hit top ranks. But as it stands I'm languishing in Bronze losing more points in one loss than I make in two wins.
Screw these ranks, I'll stick with 6v6.
After your placement matches, you're placed in a rank a few ranks lower than what you're evaluated as. This requires everyone not to just play the 7 games for placement and be done with it, but play a certain number of games to earn their rank
If you're evaluated as being a Gold player, and you're playing against Gold players, you should be getting more points for wins, and losing fewer points for a loss. This, over time, pushes you into your proper rank
It's a system that prioritizes having competitive, balanced games than a stomp fest as people climb to their proper rank
Then it really makes no sense. I'm placed in Copper III( can't go any lower), but going against players ranked Gold( that's more than a few ranks up from Copper III). According to your explanation I should never go against anyone ranked higher than Bronze III. And if I'm lucky enough to have been on a team that won against these much higher ranked opponents, why is it that the points awarded are never more than 5 but if it's a loss( which should be expected) the points lost are 100+?
It's important to mention that there are some bugs with how the game handles ties and tie breakers, which can give a weird number of points after the game. This can sometimes mean getting +5 even if you're well below your intended rank
But for non-tiebreaker wins, your points should be representative of what direction the game believes your rank should be. If you're regularly getting -100 on loses and only +5 on wins, then unfortunately you're not meant to go any higher
Can you share your DestinyTracker? I can take a look at your games, who you're getting matched against, and let you know what I think
Yes, they are the same skill level. Your competitive rank is a measure of how well you do in competitive, not how good you are at PvP as a whole
Exactly. The idea is eventually your rank and skill will be roughly the same tier and then you'll match better I guess.
Dunno how well that's actually shaking out though
Not sure. I've seen a lot of people complain about being wildly outclassed in their competitive games, so maybe not that well?
