Respect your health and do not over-employ/overwork!

Casual / Best Practice

Recently received bad news from my mentee community that we have another one fallen to a hospital bed due to work fatigue. The fallen mentee is now conscious (luckily) but very very weak, more/less similar to how I was two years ago.

So how did this mentee and I reached/abuse our health to work fatigue?

  • Me, I worked 120 hours per week for 2 months. Until one day, I couldn't wake up (or like in coma), because my wife (as she said), was already pinching my balls, but no reaction. My reason to continue, is I want to expand my financial portfolio even if I have enough savings and investment capital to leave.
  • Mentee, more/less the same thing, but only has <4 hours per day of sleep since he has to work multiple jobs one main job (9-6 on weekdays), with 2-5 clients on the side. His reason, he still has to earn a lot of funds for his emergency fund (at least 6 months or 1M in less than 6 months) and build an investment portfolio to start investing.

Don't get me wrong, I know why most people prefer to have multiple jobs as the hustle culture is indeed doable. But don't be like us, that don't have time to rest/reset or have enough sleep with time for leisure to decompress.

My advise? Make sure if you're overworked (overemployed or with a lot of overtimes), the extra load is worth the reward/salary! Beacuse if you still have to work at least 2 more jobs on the side just to beat inflation or start having savings funds, it's best to find a better employer that pays a higher rate. Easier said than done, but hospital bills ain't a joke. For me, I almost shelled out P500k (after HMO) for a week stay with another P250k for physical therapy for two weeks.

Health is wealth. Kung di maiwasan ang prolonged working at less sleep, make sure na highest quality ang tulog na yun. (with aircon), fasted state, dark room, vitamins and minerals, good pillow and bedsheets etc.

Habang nagkukulang ka kasi sa tulog hindi nakaka recover sa stress ang katawan mo. bibigay at bibigay talaga.

I can relate although wala nmn akong sakit.

After work hours sumasideline ako at plano ko ng tigilan ang sideline.

Tempting ang hustle culture pero in reality importante din talaga ang balanced life.

Enough sleep, exercise, family time, mag relax din,

Its not always about the money.

120 hours per week?

So 20 hours per day?

Sa office ka na ntutulog at di ka na naliligo at kumakain?

Working remotely and wife either orders or cooks the food.

My 120 hours per week (average) then was a mix off

  • 2-3 days working straight. Due to meetings, production issues, office politics, etc.
  • 1 day-off
  • 2-3 days working straight again
  • 1 day-off
  • any spare for part-time jobs

Overemploy ONLY if chill lang ang both work. If not, don’t. Not worth it.

Truth of the matter is, sadly, no matter how much advise is given to not give-in to overworking and juggling multiple clients, people will still give it a go until they experience it themselves.

A kind reminder that while it's tempting to achieve all of that before 30, it's also okay to work your way up at your own pace. Well wishes to your friend, OP!
