Chance Style - Returning to Game

Question

I'm considering returning after a 4+ year hiatus.

I'm going to subscribe to pick a secondary style which I think is really cool. However I'm really used to the Empire. Can I change my primary Gunslinger to a Sniper?

No you cannot change your primary tech style. You can take Sniper as a second style if you want

Thank you VERY much!

I may just relearn gunslinger, I used to know both, but I'll figure it out.

I'd rather have a mercenary or commando as a secondary.

Once you pick a secondary, can you change it again?

No. Secondary specs are permanent once chosen.

Nope, you will get several warnings telling you that specifically.

Also, you will still be Republic if you pick a normally Empire combat style. You will not be magically able to travel to Vaiken space dock, nor group with Empire based characters

I haven't subscribed, so I haven't seen that option.

Oh I assumed that. I just know the empire abilities better than the republic ones. Tbh I may just roll a new character. It would be good to relearn it from level 1 again.

Thank you all!

yeah, That is always a good thing. May want to read up on swtorista.com for all the new stuff out there. Lot of changes started at 7.0

You might want to think carefully about your gear and skills before picking a second combat style.

For example, Gunslinger and Sniper have issues with both. When it comes to skills, they are functionally identical. That can be both good (simplicity) and bad (no advantage in varying circumstances). And with the gear, the sniper needs a sniper rifle and knife, while the GS uses two pistols. That means you'll have two extra pieces of gear to upgrade to keep both styles up to spec with your level.

I recommend that you consider picking classes with very different skillsets but very similar gear. In that vein, the simplest matchup for a primary GS is the Mercenary. They can heal, which the GS can't, and their two DPS styles are also very different, with differing strengths and weaknesses. That gives you options for different scenarios, especially for fitting yourself into group content.

Further, they use identical gear - two pistols all the way, so long as you are using adaptive armor, which of course you will be. So one set of gear can suit both styles without any extra grinding or fiddling on your part.

One final note: buy the legacy perk for field respecs. It's not essential, but it's a good quality of life improvement for anyone who likes to quickly swap playstyles. It is especially useful if, for example, you pick merc as your second but want to be able to quickly switch it between DPS and heal specs to join that Ops or Master mode group forming up, or when your group's healer suddenly gets wife aggro in the middle of an Op.
