(Beginner, troubleshoot) I barely hear my voice when recording (2i2, sm57)

I just set up and a little disappointed that it barely hears my voice. I thought based on many threads that this would be a good combo for recording as well as for zoom meetings

Windows 11, scarlett 2i2 1st gen, shure sm57, tested with audacity and discord.

Initally set up with the focusrite recommended latest drivers, "Line" mode on device, gain knob turned to maximum, microphone one fist distance away from mouth. Recorded on audacity, barely a whisper when listening playback. On discord, sound check barely picks up that I'm speaking.

I used the uninstaller for focusrite drivers based on some other threads. It didn't help.

Any advice?
