Light Phone 2-Month Review
I wanted to review the Light Phone once I reached the 4-month mark but I'm about to switch to a different phone so...
I really fell in love with this phone when I saw it. I love that it has no distractions, no feeds, I didn't miss being ultra-connected at all. I dig the e-ink screen and I don't mind the slow keyboard. The design is beautiful and I love holding it in my hand, it's extremely comfortable and convenient when I'm walking or cycling, it fits in every pocket. 10/10
Now, the issues. People complain they can't hear me much during calls. Texts are extremely slow (minutes to send). I often can't place calls at all, and I can't talk to my boyfriend for some reason (it's device-related) (call goes through, no sound). Hotspot connection is awful, sometimes it takes me 5 minutes of connecting/disconnecting/rebooting to get my phone and laptop to connect, and this happens on a daily basis. I've been trying to fix these issues with my carrier and the Light support team, so far to no avail. Being able to quickly talk to my boyfriend is the main reason I carry a phone with me so... it sucks, but I will probably switch to a trusty old dumbphone until I can figure out and hopefully solve these problems.
However, my life over these two months has rather changed and I'm extremely happy about this. The main change is subtle but I do feel a lot less anxiety throughout the day. It was like a background noise, and it's gone. I feel like I'm doing more things, I'm definitely reading more (I've already read more books in 2023 than I did in all of 2022 which is pretty big considering how little time I have). I can't see myself ever going back to a smartphone to be honest.
For context, I was already social-media free and have pretty much always been. I always resented the toll it took on my attention, mood etc. every time I tried it. However, I was very addicted to YouTube, which I kept perpetually on like a radio while I went about my day. I also went through cycles of being addicted to Reddit and arguing with people online, but they never lasted long. Still, I'm happy I no longer have the option to browse Reddit while I'm at work or in the subway or whatever.
So overall, it's been a very positive experience and I'm not selling my LightPhone since I still hope I can somehow fix the issues I have and get back on it in the future. I know it's crazy, but I couldn't have gone from my smartphone to a regular old dumbphone, it didn't even cross my mind. When I set out to look for a different phone and eventually found the LP, what I searched was "smartphone with no internet". It was just a given to me. Living with the Light Phone has taught me that I don't need a smartphone, and it has also taught me that I don't even need a phone that looks good. Who cares. Yeah, I'll miss the e-ink screen a ton but it's not like I'll be staring at an Alcatel Dual Sim anyway (I guess. Lol).
So here is my 2 cents and hopefully I'll be back in another 2 months to share that I was able to fix the issues and I'm using the LP again :-)
P.S. Oh, yeah, another con I didn't mention... I found out I have to pay obscene amounts of money if I put smiley faces in my texts. What the fuck?! The world has turned crazy!
