Are you obligated to tell your current landlord that you are signing an additional lease in another state?

If you obviously keep paying your current rent and your new rent, they wouldn’t know right? Would you have to tell the second landlord that you have another lease. They overlap by 3 months.

I don’t see how you could be obligated to tell him, how many leases you pay is none of his business as long as fulfil your contractual obligations.

No, no obligation. I'm also not sure they'd care, as long as you're still able to make payments on both. But even if they do care, you don't have to tell them

Okay great, for the second lease if they ask for rental history, and landlord reference would it be bad if I said I didn’t have any? I don’t want to ask my current landlord for a reference because that would pose questions.

Depends on the landlord I guess. What did you do to get your current lease?

Any terms about your lease should be laid out in black and white on your agreement.

Generally no.
