reddit.comBooted up the game to check out the new update, only to find this grey screen. I thought the issue might have been caused by mods, but I checked three times, made sure all mods were off and I was using the right playset, and had the same results each time. Upon further inspection, I found that multiple assets in the Empire Selection/ Creation screens failed to load as well. This included the default empires as well.

If you're on a Steam Deck and on experimental Proton, this seems to be common. Some players have reported that other Proton versions have worked, as has turning it off entirely and using the Linux build.

Spot on, thank you! I hadn't realized the Paradox launcher was fixed for Linux, but so far it seems like it has been, so I don't need Proton anymore. Without Proton the game is running perfectly.
Also, I'm not sure if it's important or if it's a me issue, but I did test a few other versions of Proton. Most of them had the same problem, one crashed and another loaded the launcher indefinitely, (or maybe I just didn't wait long enough). Granted I was not thorough and didn't check every version. Anyways thanks again for your help.

My paradox launcher is still broken.

Try forcing the game to use DirectX 9, heard that fixes it. I think you add -dx9 to the launch options (don't quote me on that).
