Upgrading my PC after ten years - not sure where to start

Build Help

Somewhere in 2012-2014 I built a gaming PC which I was very happy with the time. Since then the only thing I've changed is the graphics card which was a gift from a family member in 2021. Lately I've felt the need to upgrade with newer games no longer allowing me to have high settings and load times getting longer and longer compared to my friends in games like Overwatch.

Below are my current specs:

CPUIntel Core i7-7700K @ 4.20GHz
CPU CoolerNOCTUA Fan (not sure what model)
MotherboardASUS Maximus VIII Ranger
MemoryCORSAIR Vengeance LED DDR4 8GB *2 (total 16GB)
Graphics CardiGame GeForce RTX 3070 Ti Ultra W OC 8G-V
Power SourceANTEC EAG PRO 750W
StorageSSD 222GB + HDD 1.99TB
Network CardIntel(R) Ethernet Connection (2) I219-V
CaseTHERMALTAKE Armor Revo Gaming Case White

Regardless of anything else I intend to replace the case since it is looking a little worse for wear and its no longer the kind of aesthetic I appreciate. As for actual performing parts I've become very out of touch over the years and I have no idea which parts to prioritise replacing or what would be appropriate.

I intend to continue using the PC to play games like Overwatch, modded Skyrim/Minecraft, and new release games such as Final Fantasy VII Remake and Starfield. If its relevant to availability, I live in Australia.

If there's any required information I haven't provided I'm happy to offer it. :)

7700K was released 2017 - so I guess you ”only” have had your PC for about 6 years.

Ah, I must have replaced the CPU at some point and completely forgotten about it lol. There's probably a few other things that were changed in that case so it might not be as bad as I thought. :)

Motherboard cpu and storage gonna be your starting point

You are going to need an nvme for sure lol

You could get a decent CPU, motherboard, SSD, and case upgrade for $630 https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/fzr2hk

If you have a bigger budget, take a look at the latest gen Ryzen 5 7600X and 32GB of DDR5

Thanks mate, this looks like a good start. I'll have to consider if I want to shell out extra for the Ryzen.

As for the DDR5, there's nothing stopping me from just replacing the RAM at a future date right? If I were to make the new build now then buy better memory a few months down the line I assume that won't be an issue.

DDR5 needs a DDR5 motherboard. The B660 board I recommended for the i5-12400F is DDR4-only so you can reuse your current RAM and upgrade later.

Ryzen 7000 is only compatible with DDR5 so you’ll have to buy new memory straight away.

Thanks mate

Depending on what you go with, you may want to consider taking out your GPU and doing a full rebuild around it. You for sure need a new cpu, motherboard, and storage card. You also said you needed a new case, putting you most of the way there lol

That's a good point. Although there isn't much reason to replace the fans, network card, or power supply, I'd imagine.

That is unless they're incompatible with the new parts.

Yeah. You shouldn't need a network card on a new board. From what I can tell, your card is just for Ethernet and that's standard on pretty much and board you'd buy now.

Depending on how old your psu is, you pry want to upgrade that too. While you aren't getting any additional benefits (psus haven't really gotten any more efficient), the last thing you'd want is your power supply failing on your new build. That's no bueno lol.

The fans are fine if you like them. At the end of the day, fans are fans

I hope that helps!

Thanks, mate. I'll see about that power supply.

Starfield? Yikes

Not sure why that's:

  1. Yikes
  2. Relevant

Shouldn't judge people's game choices, especially in a PC build post.
