This game should change its name

As LTD2 players we want what's best to grow the community and support the developers to ensure it's continuation. Changing the name seems like an obvious benefit on many fronts.

Legion TD 2 is objectively a bad name. I understand the history of it and why they chose it, but at this point it's like when they released the movie Trolls 2 but there was no Trolls 1. People will look at the game and immediately try to decide "should I even try playing this or should I look for the first Legion TD? Which one is better?" Etc etc.

The name Legion TD isn't particularly descriptive or useful to what the game is about. It's not really a tower defense game which are much less dynamic and typically not PvP.

We're pretty far past peak Warcraft 3 days so there's no recognition there that will draw new players in. Also this game is so so much better than a WC3 custom map, it cheapens it to keep the association.

Doing a full rebrand/reskin of the game wouldn't be worth the effort, but doing a simple rename and redo of the splash art and menus would be relatively minor efforts that could have a huge impact in drawing buyers from the Steam store browser.

Thoughts?

I'm not sure. My friend found this game a couple days ago, BECAUSE we had played the wc3 version recently, and it had the same name. I suppose that's rare now, but it still happened! She got so excited that she found it. We bought it immediately and have been playing it as much as possible. I'm pretty fond of the name, my friend and I wouldn't have found it otherwise, but i get where you're coming from. I don't know if it's a necessary change, though.

My brother even started playing it after i told him about it. I'm planning on getting other family members to get into the game as well! It's been a lot of fun.

Yeah. I’m in the same boat, only recognized the game because of the name other wise I probably would never have bought it

I think many of us found the game this way but I don't think there's much juice left to squeeze there. Interesting that it's still happening, though.

I think it's been mentioned before, but Dota 2 is much the same. And if they had changed the name recently, then my friend and I never would have found it, which would suck. I think it's safe enough to leave the name. Especially since the game is very inexpensive, but you can play it as much as you want or can. There's people willing to try a game just because it's on the cheaper end compared to other games anyway. Imo, there's a lot of value in this game for its price tag.

I like the name and think it should remain. šŸ™‚

Dunno, DotA 2 is in the same situation and seems to be doing pretty well, despite the name.

Also, it is definitely still a tower defense. Arguably tower wars, for the PvP aspect, but for me, that's just a subgenre of tower defense (and the name tower wars is a bit more underground).

Counterpoint - League of Legends also spawned from DOTA and is orders of magnitudes more successful. Also DOTA2 was developed by Valve so it really couldn't fail and more than it has.

DotA 2 has been quite successful. Yes, LoL was much more successful, but I think the name has nothing to do with its success. The game is much more accessible, less clunky to play, easier for new players. It has everything to reach more players than DotA and DotA 2.

And being developped by Valve doesn't make a game succeed automatically. That's just the survivorship bias. Artifact for example was a recent Valve failure.

when is the last time it did a front page half off sale on steam, that would boost it too. the state of it is pretty good right now imo, just needs to be on sale.

I bought it a month ago because it was on sale, was on my wishlist for a year and it went on sale quite a few times!

This is a good discussion and it's something that the dev team specifically debated about for many weeks before the game was released, but ultimately decided that the familiarity/name recognition would be worth it, despite our general agreement that the "TD 2" isn't the best descriptor of gameplay and that the "2" can be a turn-off to some.

Was it the right decision? we'll never really know. We're hesitant to *change* the name this far in, though, since that feels like that would lead to a lot of confusion. Maybe if there was some kind of re-launch in the future, that would be the right time to do it.

It's awesome to see people wanting the game to succeed, so thank you for sharing this u/FrogMasterX and everyone else who continues to share their thoughts like this! And even when we don't reply, we're reading everything!

Just want to say that i agree with OP, and now the comments will reflect more than one oponion.

Like many of you i also came from wc3, and i can understand why you can argue that it is still a TD, but I agree with OP still. A new name could help bring the game to further heights.

Comparing the name to dota2 makes no sense for me, since dota already had 50-100x as many players in wc3 as ltd, and many players bring more players.

I only found this game due to its connection to StarCraft custom games....

FrogMasterXOP•

Yeah we're all here for that reason, the market has already been tapped is the point. It needs to appeal to non-WC3 old heads to really expand.

I think you're reading too much into it.

The name is to easy recognition, i think that the name is not bad but something like "Legions of nova" could be cooler, anyways, i'm not in to marketing, i don't know how that would work.

Dots 2 seems to be wildly successful with the same issue. Not sure the name is the reason for it not being bigger.

Go compare League of Legends to DOTA2. Same base game, different naming strategy, massively different outcomes.

DOTA2 also has the advantage that it's made by Valve so they can pump players to it easily in Steam.

Totally agree. The fact that there are so many people in the comments who say they found the game because of the name only proves that it succeeds in what it tries to do, not that what it tries to do is particulary good. I wouldn't have even looked twice at this game if it wasn't for my friends playing it.

Always thought the name was stupid.

Back in WC3 I spent my first half dozen games trying to maze, wondering if my towers moving was from a gamemode option I somehow missed or if it was just a unique aspect of my builder.

I just stumbled across and purchased this a few days ago. I'm a long-time TD fan and was happy to see a full-fledged game of this style.

I do have to admit... I did look for "TD 1"

As an existing player who enjoys the game, I don't think im qualified to say if it would be better or worse to change the name.

I would still play the game, since the gameplay wont change, but I have no clue what would market better for people who dont know about the game.

only bought this game because of it being a standalone version of LTD (was playing the DOTA 2 map of it recently)

this game also plays and feels like a sequel to LTD as many of the towers are actually based on LTD1.

honestly this is a funny post. maybe you made it to troll, and maybe we all fell for it. actually yeah im pretty sure this topic is a joke and you definitely got me.

FrogMasterXOP•

Yeah I'm trolling trying to get the devs to greatly increase their conversion rate in the Steam store, almost gottem!
