What should I do with an unused DirecTV receiver?

A few years ago, I was having trouble with my DirecTV/TiVo receiver, so I called DirecTV and they sent me a new one. But it turns out it was a problem with the external hard drive, so once I unplugged that, the original receiver worked fine.

So now I have an unused DirecTV receiver that's maybe connected to my account. What can I do with it? Do I call DirecTV and see if I can send it back? Sell it online? Throw it away? I have no idea what I'm supposed to do now.

I had same issue with an HR44. I kept calling DTV to return it. After a year I gave up. They didn’t want it any more. I saved it and will pull the hard drive when my other hr44 dies.

Are you still paying for it monthly on your account? If so, call them and have it removed from your account. Then take it to any FedEx or UPS store, they will ship it back to DirecTV for free, make sure you get a receipt.

Actual Tech support representative here ✋. Please call in and check if the box is "Active" on your account. If it is, then you are paying $7 per month for it. Have it removed if so. When it was removed from the account, the system will then decide if you need to return it or not.

If it is not on Active on your account. Do what ever you want with it.

If it's not on your account and is owned, not leased it's worth a few bucks on ebay

If you orders an ERP and it was needed back 4 years is too long. At this point recycle it. You can’t sell it as no one would be able to use it. It’s broken and you cannot activate leased receivers sold by previous customers.
