People on their Phones

I’m so sick of people on their cell phones. Documenting literally everything they do, blasting tv shows, conversations and music in public. Can’t go into a store without some loudmouth on their phone. Idiots in their cars holding up traffic because they’re looking down at a green light.

You can’t enjoy anything anymore. Found a cool place to sit and relax? Better post a photo about it.

Went to chipotle? Don’t wait, take a picture while you’re walking in the parking lot.

At the Grand Canyon? Better sit at the edge and have your friend take 20 photos from every angle instead of savoring the moment.

Concert? Hold your phone up the entire time so other people can’t see and pretty much miss the whole thing because you’re locked into making people believe you and your life are interesting.

Fuckin sick of it.

Mostly agree (he says, looking at his phone). I especially hate videos of everything. I can tolerate a few pics. Reddit, for instance, is loaded with videos of people being harmed and everyone recording, not helping.

Or if we're literally going to rant against it, why would we go to that sub?

I have memory issues. I'm gonna document it. Sorry. No not dunkin donuts but scenery? My kids doing cute things? Hell yeah. There's a time and place for everything tho. More people need to get their head out of their butts. But I sympathize with the point that like everything else in life, people will take it to weird extremes.

My favorite is dumbasses watching fireworks through the 5"x3" screen of their phone instead of across the whole breadth of the sky in front of them. A) You're not actually watching the fireworks, you're watching your phone render video of the fireworks. B) You can find literally hundreds of thousands of videos of fireworks on the internet. Better videos than yours of better fireworks displays than this one. C) Your brain can also record memories, which it is more likely to do if you're engaged in the experience instead of with your phone. D) No one will care if you share the video, everyone has seen fireworks. E) You will never, ever watch the video again.

If I'm somewhere I consider to be beautiful, I will take a photo of it. If I find some kind of neat bug or a pretty flower, I will take a picture of it. If I am at the park, and my kiddo is doing something cute, I take a picture of it.

I almost never take pictures of my food unless my friends have texted me asking what I had or made for dinner. I don't get in other peoples way when taking pictures.

I used to only be able to talk to my mom on the phone when I went grocery shopping alone, with my husband in the car. Otherwise, I couldn't always talk freely about my stressors (husband being a dick, other things) and so I would call her while I shopped. I never spoke loudly, and never put it on speaker. Almost always had a headset on so I could be sure I wasn't bothering people.

Whats worse is people just standing around having a goddamn family reunion in the isles at stores, blocking the entire isle on both sides and not giving a shit about it tbh.

People talking on headsets is still bothersome. I understand your need for private convos when your life structure prohibits them, but I don’t really fancy people talking on earpods around me either. It’s less irritating than speaker phone convos or watching videos with no headphones but still irritating. I also think airpods make everyone look like they’re on day release just walking around talking to themselves.

with the pictures; I disagree.

some people won't remember the moments, so the pictures get taken. I wouldn't be able to remember quite a bit without taking them.

Phones aren't the problem; social media is

I like to join in if the conversation is on speaker. if you're going to be so boisterous , there's nothing I can do but be involved than oh well, We're all talking to Aunt Debbie now.

Same with people constantly on social media. Especially people who will pull out their phone and immediately start scrolling completely out of habit in a social situation.

I have a family member that even if we're at a family gathering, BBQ, restaurant, whatever, they will take out their phone and browse social media. Even if you're directly talking to them. Not even looking for anything specific, just mindlessly scrolling through social media and its fucking infuriating at times.

People are lonely and don't know how to truly connect and are insecure, and this is part and parcel of that - having to take photos of whatever to 'prove' you're enjoying things in lieu of being in the moment and just enjoying it IRT. It's a thing. So much so people will defend it (this unhealthy behavior) to the end.

In 2019 at a show, I caught myself watching the video on my phone and realized I paid close to a hundred bucks for that ticket and I'll be damned if I waste that money watching my phone.

It was a legendary once in a lifetime event. I got video of just the beginning of a couple songs and just enjoyed the rest of it. No regrets.

I would have to agree because it’s just ridiculous l! I mean just have fun without having to take a photo all the fucking time!

It’s even worse when you see small infants with an iPad glued to their face. Can’t even go 5 minutes in a grocery store without being constantly entertained

Monkey see monkey do. When I have children I will make an active effort to not be on my phone.

What if it keeps them from crying and screaming? Wouldn't that be worse?

So any time they cry you give them what they want that’s just reinforcing bad behavior

It sucks but it's not part of our world. We will never win. It's close to being over.

I do use my phone as described at times. I don't think that people are doing all of these things all of the time. I will continue to use my phone that way because my friends are not living near me anymore and I have a bad memory. I grew up with a phone at this point. It feels like an extension of me and having it around doesn't impact my experience of a place and time. Both can be happening at the same time as I don't believe anyone is truly that glued to the phone.

One of my favorite factoids is that people who take a lot of pictures and videos actually recall a great deal less detail after an experience. A handful of photos and video are helpful; but at some point they stop helping and actually hinder recall of the experience. Yes, they have actually studied this and yes there are a lot of details I’m leaving out and all that jazz. That being said, it’s strong evidence that we really should be living in the moment and enjoying our experiences more.
