SIB Tears of the Kingdom if I didn't like BOTW

[Switch] :switch:

Longtime Zelda fan, loved it from Link to the Past up to the last Zelda I've played, Spirit Tracks. Never played Skyward Sword as I didn't have a Wii U at the point of release.

Borrowed BOTW from a friend a few months ago. Whilst I finished it, I didn't really like it. Felt the game was bare compared to usual Zelda games, and I get that they tried doing a different approach with it being more open-world. The first trials were cool, but I got bored eventually, and didn't really like the cooking element, that you had to eat something to survive weathers and all that.

However, I'm hearing TOTK is substantially better in every way and I feel like missing out if I skip it.

I also don't mind open world stuff. Big fan of the OG Assassin's Creed and LOVED Origins/Odyssey/Valhalla, especially Valhalla. So it's not that I hate RPGs an open worlds.

My precious Switch is just gathering dust and it's a shame.

Any second opinions would be welcomed!

It’s basically a continuation of Breath of the Wild. Don’t bother.

is botw and totk the same as genshin impact without the gacha?

I mean, genshin is good, but it's an imitation of botw, it doesn't get to it's lvl, although, the combat imho is better (in genshin) the main difference is that in genshin you're just fucking around destroying ennemies, you don't feell threatened (unless it's a boss) botw /totk it's a battle for survival.

you have to use ressources and respond to ennemy movement intelligently and while you don't have a lot of skills you can use your environment much more and more creatively in botw, so each combat feel tense and the limited moveset doesn't feel so bad once you take the world around you into account, the powers are also really fun to use.

Totk elevate it even further letting you do truly insane stuff, so there's more difference than juste the gacha missing but they are similar at least in how the world feel, tears of the kingdom is a much better game tough because it doesn't restrict you at all, so all those "ahh can't do this right now" of genshin are gone in the Zelda games, or at least you never have to wait a few weeks or event to get what you need.

I completely disagree. I Hated botw... Loved Genshin. People 💩 on Genshin simply because it's Not Zelda and it's a mobile gatcha game. But I bet if Genshin carried the Zelda name with no extra purchases, it would be seen as superior.

Hey, that's okay, but there's no world where genshin doesn't have those egregious gacha mechanics, so i can't really judge it without them.

Zelda also I a very known name, that means history with the franchise for many, and that often mean more meaningful lore.

And while the maps are similar the way to engage with them isn't, there's also the grind issue, why did i stop playing genshin? Because it felt like a job, I felt the need to maximize output and that's not a good thing.

Genshin is a good game, but breath of the wild was a breakthrough in open world design and it's sequel is truly impressive.

I'm not shitting on genshin, i liked my time with it, but the after taste wasn't great "Ohh I'm gonna miss that time limited event" the Zelda games are a much more freeform and respectful experience in comparaison.

I know why I stopped playing genshin, but i can see myself playing Tears of the kingdom on and off for years.

That said if you're having fun with it that's all that matters!

Exploring works the same (stamina, climbing, etc) but I disagree hard with the person saying genshin improved BotW. Exploring is the only thing that is the same. And I suppose having puzzles in the world? Not like that is unique at all. But in every other way genshin is a predatory gacha game with microtransactions and daily quests and BotW is simply….. not. It’s just the exploring that is the same.

Yes, though Genshin improved on a lot of the game mechanics that BotW and TotK implemented (ie no weapons breaking, no slipping down mountains in the rain, etc). Other than that it's pretty much a clear rip off with gacha, but Genshin is honestly the better game mechanically, it's just predatory.

I think you should go into like you go into the other open world games you played which is probably to have fun and explore. Yes, it still follows the similar structure of BOTW, but i believe that the so called “dungeons” are better and shrines are more innovative and fun. BOTW definitely isn’t the best Zelda game(for me that’s Links Awakening) but I think going into not thinking about it being like the other Zelda games you could possibly enjoy it more. The story is also 100x better this time around if that’s important to you as well.

The thing you mentioned disliking is the thing that changed the most. The world is MUCH denser content-wise.

I felt the same way, BOTW was my first switch game/first proper zelda game. I had my fun with this and the sequel, but it didn't really occur to me why everyone liked these games. BOTW and TOTK are essentially physics sandbox games disguised as zelda games. The fun came from exploring the world with basically garry's mod levels freedom.

TOTK doubles down on this and basically lets you create your own vehicles. But the thing is in a game like Gmod or Minecraft. Where the fun comes in you expressing your creativity. But when you have no skill or desire to be that creative, you're left with just another RPG.

A really good RPG don't get me wrong. But not something that have the same impact as ocarina of time or twilight princess. I'm around 20-30 hours in and I'm still waiting for this game to wow me and make me say "this game was certainly worth the hype"

You wont hate the game, you'll just likely have the same feeling when playing BOTW. But I'd say give it a miss and buy something else.

I know im a little late but honestly I could never vibe with botw despite really wanting to like it but I picked up totk and pre-ordered pikman 4 with the $99 voucher a couple days ago and have been hooked more than I ever was with botw. I can't quite put my finger on it but it just feels better?? It's still a super open sandbox but has more depth to it, the game certainly doesn't hold your hand but I feel like things are explained a bit better here as it's more obvious where you SHOULD go if you want to progress at a reasonable rate. Another thing with botw I really didn't jive with was weapons breaking and while it's still a thing here it just doesn't feel as annoying to me.

To anyone who was 'meh' botw I'd say try this but if you completely detest botw then I wouldn't go for it.

Also highly recommend the route of buying the game vouchers from nintendo online as I essentially got totk and pikman 4 for $50 each.

Didn’t like BOTW. This game did not change anything I didn’t like about BOTW. So I say no.
