Is there a reason why so many NPCs don't remember Link from when they saw him in BotW

SpoilerQuestion

Beedle for instance, acts like you're this brand new person when you first meet him.

It seems only story centric characters remember Link.

I get that some people are playing this without having played BotW and maybe it's supposed to be a fresh experience, but it feels odd that familiar NPCs are unfamiliar with Link.

Even if the timeline was affected, it's not like Link never existed or never went all over Hyrule, meeting all these people.

It bugged me. At first I thought there was some kind of 'Link was missing for twenty years' or he fell into a different timeline.

Like, he had full hearts and stamina in the opening. I assumed it was implying that Link canon helped as many people as he could while rebuilding his strength.

Bolson. You basically lived on my front lawn for months.

I’ve been absolutely dreading the day I find Bolson.

The most reasonable reason is simply gameplay purposes.

Exactly because not everyone playing TOTK has played BOTW, they can't make everyone who has appeared in both games be familiar with Link.

They've had to balance it out and while in some cases it is rather jarring, there's still enough people around that do know Link.

Link going straight to Ganon from the Great Plateau naked and killing him with a pot lid is canon.

it's not like Link never existed or never went all over Hyrule, meeting all these people.

But that's exactly what it is, as far as any kind of Canon is concerned. Link just does the main quest, not concerning himself with 900 koroks, or every citizen with a problem.

Keeps it disconnected enough from BotW that you don't need to play it to understand what's going on, and there's enough nods to BotW for people that did.

I think that in Tears of the Kingdom, Link kind of does the bare minimum from Breath of the Wild. That's why major NPCs remember him, but minor ones don't. Because in this version, Link didn't interact with them.

Also gameplay reasons. It'd be kind of weird if every other NPC decided to take a trip down memory lane of the time you stepped on her flowers.
