Our beautiful silver gum tree has gone from having lovely green leaves to dead looking brown ones in the span of a few months, together with some nasty looking cracks near the base. Have the Fates cast the soul of my beloved tree into the Styx forever, or can it yet be saved?
I am going to assume it’s not viable. I’ve seen them really come back from a lot so I don’t like to never say never, but compared to what it was when it was healthy you’re looking at a longer road to recovery than if you replaced it with an affordable smaller tree of the same species.
There are lots of cool Corymbia and classic gums though, and nature really just does what she does.
The cracks at the base, brown canopy don’t bode well either way though. You may be able to cut it down at the base and it could return from the ground with established roots, but the current state of it is telling me there’s something going on underground.
Did it freeze or get abnormally cold/hot and wet recently?
