The definition of a primer

A primer is a brief piece of single-stranded DNA that is used in the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and other laboratory procedures, as it relates to genomics. When using the PCR technique, a pair of primers hybridizes with the DNA from the sample to identify the region that will be amplified, producing millions of copies in a very short amount of time. Additionally, DNA sequencing and other experimental procedures use primers.
