How do I know when the Metro North Line from Grand Central is bypassing stations?

In NYC for the summer and still getting used to things. Boarded a train to today only to realize too late that it was bypassing stations and we would have to travel backwards from Stanford to get to our stop. Do trains on this line often do this at night (train was around 9:30pm), or is it displayed somewhere that I missed indicating this would be the case?
