Why does it seem like some men only befriend attractive women?

I've been in situations where I want to get to know someone better but they brush me off. I could sense it was because they didn't find me attractive. It feels like they won't even consider a friendship with me. Is this a lack of maturity? Are some men that shallow that they won't even consider a friendship with a female they aren't attracted to?
