Reddit, can you help me prove this Facebook sob story is a hoax?

This story has been shared across Facebook pretty rapidly over the last 24 hours, with accompanying picture.

Now, here's the thing. Those kids look damn familiar. A Tineye reverse image search provides no known internet matches to this specific picture, which I find to be odd. I'm also fairly certain that there is some level of Photoshop happening, most likely the family has been superimposed, or the soldiers added.

Some further research turned up a different account, purportedly from the actual pilot in 2008. That account is found here: http://acaptainslog.blogspot.com/2008/07/fallen-soldier_04.html

Note the lack of a son in both versions. Now, is it that this story is completely fabricated, or the picture is added to give the story some "credence"?

Snopes provides no help either.
