Why is atheism as default subreddit?

Seems unfair to people with different beliefs. Atheists may be the majority on Reddit but still, others may find it offensive. Personally as a muslim I'm not offended by it being a default subreddit but some of the posts were very offensive, and I'm not easily offended.
