Anyone have a starter kit that made good beer that they'd recommend?

I'm looking for a gift for my sister's boyfriend, he's really into DIY stuff and enjoys canning, and since he likes beer I thought he might be into home brewing. Two things though, if it tastes awful, it might discourage him, and I don't want to spend a whole ton of money on him in general, but specifically on something he might not like. Any suggestions?
