Mainstream Atheism

Why the increase in number of people converting to atheism nowadays? I suppose that most people are becoming atheists to escape their original religions. they just don't want to be identified as christians or muslims or.. because these are usually stupid and close-minded.. For example, a person is born muslim, but as he grow up, he doesn't like being identified as muslim, since it's linked to terrorism, and usually religious muslim do stupid things. so he runs to atheism, since it's mainstream.
