Halo 4: Lagfest
After playing many online games since release, my impression I am left with is this is the worst net code of the whole series. Thoughts?
First the matchmaking system has been woeful, and there is no longer a "Prefer Good Connection" option. I am constantly thrown into matches where a US or overseas player has host.
Secondly, the way the game handles lag seems like a huge backwards step from the past few games. Bungie spent so much time refining it so it feels at least fair. (In laggy games one would often experience mutual deaths between skilled opponents) it seems as if this has been thrown out the window and been replaced with a basic server-client style system for a peer-to-peer multiplayer. Headshots don't register, the scattershot feels useless unless you have host, grenades fly out a second after throwing them, etc.
I'm tired of getting Beat-Downs from the grave, killed before I can even see an enemy walk around a corner, shot through walls after taking cover, and a killcam which is absolutely useless as it doesn't even shot the enemy players screen - just a shitty estimation of what they saw from your end (usually shooting a wall or thin air to kill me around corners or behind them etc.).
It's getting harder to see 343 addressing these issues as time goes on. It seems like the nail in the coffin of console gaming to me.
There is a lot of outcry on he official forums with little response: https://forums.halowaypoint.com/yaf_postst129636p53_NO--REGIONAL-FILTER----OR--GOOD-CONNECTION.aspx
