How do you extract vocals from songs to use them in your tracks?

I've heard about this phase flipping technique but I can't see it working because majority of the sounds/leads are sent directly to the center for obvious reasons. I'm aware I'll never get a perfect acapella but do you know any cool ways to at least get a relatively clean vocal from a track?

Can you only do it if you have the EXACT intrumental?
