Just at Demon Ruins before the fog and the shortcut to Lost Izalith. I've looked it up but something is not clear to me.

To actually save him, do I open the shortcut before I enter the fog? Or do I enter the fog, talk to him after the bosses, then go back and open the shortcut. What is the guaranteed method? Thanks so much!

---EDIT--- Alright! Here's what I did: Fought Firesage Demon first, then opened the Shortcut, killed the bugs with arrows as I didn't want them going up the stair and it loading Izalith (before I got the helm), went back and was pleased to summon him to fight Centipede, then I went no further than the Centipede Chamber (skipping his dialog at the Izalith bonfire altogether), and just headed back to the shortcut and there he was, depressed as shit and sitting on the ground, but not hostile. I guess I'll search for a vid of his dialog at Camp Izalith some other time. Thanks again!
