I need help fleshing out an idea...

The idea being that my players are applying for a chance to fight in a tournament. Winners of tourney receive adventuring contracts from the crown.

What could I do to make the tourney not just combat? What questions are asked by the interviewer to the pcs? Anything else that would make this work?
