What things do your parents do that as an adult, you consider disrespectful or obnoxious?

My mother asked me to set aside part of my weekend so she and my dad could come visit me. My husband's birthday is Tuesday and they want to take him to lunch, plus I am a little over 37 weeks pregnant and they want to see me before the baby comes. It was a busy weekend since lots of people want to see my husband for his birthday, so I had to work our plans around them coming up. The first half of the week my mother talks about how much she wants to come up.

Then on Wednesday, she tells me they are not coming up. My grandma is getting company and it would be wrong not to stay and help out. This is pretty annoying as it isn't even my parent's company and it seems like a poor excuse, but fine. Then my mother claims it is because she can't find a babysitter for her foster child (his parents are crazy drug addicts and as long as he has ties to them he is not allowed in my home as a safety measure for my family). Again, it sounds like just another excuse. I've had a really bad cold for almost two weeks. My mother texts me to ask me how I am. I tell her that I am still sick and she replies, "okay, Dad and I won't come up and bother you tomorrow." This pisses me off right away. She is now acting like not coming up is a favor to me, like she is being considerate. I call her out on it and tell her not to pretend that she was coming when she made it clear she had no intention on showing up. It is disrespectful. She isn't doing me a favor. I was already upset because it felt like she was blowing me off to begin with and she is trying to make herself feel better about it. I usually don't care, I get that things come up, but a combination of lame excuses and all the juggling I did at the beginning of the week to accommodate her coming up, I felt it was incredibly disrespectful.

My mother will also say or do something in front of me and then denying she is doing it. She was trying to text and drive and I took her phone away. I told her not to text and drive, she says,"no I wasn't." Your phone was in your hand, I watched you type out a message on it, don't lie to me. She will say something hurtful and then deny she ever said it. As an adult, I expect to be treated like an adult. I don't expect others to accommodate me, I give plenty of notice if I am coming to visit, and I don't lie. It seems like all my mother does is lie. It's like she would die if she told the truth about something. It is very frustrating.

My mother in law has gotten better about treating us as adults, but she still does thins that are obnoxious. Years ago, when my husband and I had just gotten married, she insisted having money on our credit card was wrong, paid it off and had us pay her back. I was not happy about it and it would never happen today, but my husband did it to appease her. We had it set up so the bank cut her a check from our account every month. We get a call that the checks stopped coming. We explain that's because we paid her in full. She says, "oh, well, you could keep paying me. I put the money in a slush fund so if I ever need anything I can do it. If you keep paying me you can use it too." We told her no, we are adults with our own savings. Especially with a baby on the way, we can handle our own finances. Why the hell would we keep giving her hundreds of dollars a month when we could use that money to do several other things, including on setting up a college fund for our child?

So what do your parents do that makes you feel like they don't understand that you are an adult?
