My girlfriend just dumped me because her mom didn't approve of me not being Jewish (I don't have a religion, so I guess you can say I'm atheist). r/atheism, what ways has religion hurt you in your life?
So my screen name isn't entirely untrue--it just takes me a long time to find someone that I really connect with, so when I do it's a big deal. I had just started dating this amazing girl, and a week and a half into our relationship she told her mom she was seeing someone (to be like, "Look, mom! I've finally found someone!") because she's like me in the sense that she doesn't find many opportunities to be with someone.
Well, her mom didn't like that I wasn't Jewish and promptly told her to break up with me. For most people, a break up this early in a relationship shouldn't be so devastating, but since I don't often feel like this toward another person, I was so heavily invested and attached because I really wanted to make it work. You can imagine how crushed I was/still am.
She's told me that she really wants to be with me but she just can't because she feels like it wouldn't end up working because of her mom. She's eastern european as well, so that adds another degree of complication because most eastern european parents are super traditional and want to keep their family in the same "culture."
I think it's stupid that she can't date someone that's not from the same religion/culture, even if that someone (me) makes her really happy. If you're religious/cultured, you'll always have that regardless of what happens. But you might not always have who you're with. So why wouldn't you want to spend as much time possible with them now...
I'm not looking for pity or sympathy, though your thoughts are greatly appreciated. No, I'm asking you, r/atheism, how has religion hurt you in your life?
