Challenges and compromises of dating non vegan-straight-edge - or do you avoid such relationships?
Vegan straight edge here, for a decade.
Clarification: When I refer to "non vegan-straight-edge" in this post I'm referring to someone that's not vegan and not straight edge - i.e. not: straight edge but non-vegan.
Over the years, I have met very, very few fellow vegan straight edge people. On the rare occasions I did, we didn't necessarily have an emotional connection or attraction.
In my search for a partner, I admittedly have dated non-straight edge people that I had a strong connection with. It always sooner or later becomes an issue. If they drink, I won't drink with them. If they like to cook non-vegan, or have a favorite food that isn't vegan, I won't share it with them. I tried compromising to date a long-time vegetarian, but she loved cheese, and said it would be easier for her if I were a meat eater since then I could eat everything she could (ouch).
Sexuality is perhaps the hardest part to navigate, especially as I get older and people often expect routine sex to be part of what they learned constitutes a healthy relationship. I've tried meeting partners halfway on that, which only leave us both unhappy, and no matter how we talk about it, they feel like something is amiss if it isn't happening. On the few cases where I've tried to set this part of straight edge aside, compromising it in an effort to make something work with someone that I'm otherwise very compatible with, it gradually became a source of stress for me that led to issues between us.
I've learned a lot about the world from people I have been very close to for years at a time. I feel like if I had insisted on only being in relationships with fellow vegan straight-edge folks, I would have instead spent those years alone (due to difficulty finding other vegan straight edge types) and missed out on what they shared with me about their experiences, cultures, and philosophies. As the probability of marriage coming from a relationship increases with my age though, perhaps I need to outgrow that way of seeing it? Certainly one of the things I learned from those failed attempts is that it seems like having a life partner that isn't vegan straight edge would be very hard for me.
