Reddit, I continually see people in the news being held pending a trial. They are often held for a year behind bars waiting for their trial. What are your general thoughts on this?

If you are held behind bars for one year of your life, and you somehow live to be 100 years old, you'd spent 1% of your life behind bars. Certainly doesn't appear to be a speedy trial and prosecutors can use this as leverage to get them to plead guilty to lessor crimes and get off with time served when the prosecution doesn't have much of a case.
