What does your daily schedule look like?

I have been working in an elementary classroom at a private school for the past three years. Currently the children in the class are considered fourth graders. In my opinion the students are way behind academically and socially and I feel that much of the school day is unproductive. Here is a typical day:

  • 8:15-8:45 Students arrive and unpack. They are encouraged to read books but typically end up playing.

  • 8:45-9:15 Morning Meeting (a few grammar sentences are corrected by the group and some math drills individually)

  • 9:15-11:45 This is the time where students complete pre-assigned work in small groups or individually. Forty-five minute long specials like art, music, guidance, Spanish and Latin take place during this time. Also a twenty minute snack time typically occurs everyday.

  • 11:45-12:45 Lunch

  • 12:45-1:30 Recess

  • 1:30-2:00 P.E

  • 2:00-2:15 Transition from outside

  • 2:15-2:30 Individual Reading time

  • 2:30- 3:00 Group Reading Time

  • 3:00-3:15 Getting ready for dismissal

So basically there is two and a half hours of down time every day. Please tell me what your student's day looks like so I can form some basis of comparison.
