I used to be a big lurker and contribute here, but have since drifted away. One thing I always thought of is "Why not an amish-like community? at least to start."
EDIT: If you downvote, please comment too. Id like to hear why you dont like the idea.
Think about it, if we can get a large plot of land, and then say it is a religous type lifestyle similar to the amish (i am not sure how this works). Why cant we get the basics of what we are looking for right here.
The big reason for the island is a sense of community, no? Think about it, everyone works together to build the main facilities. Simple homes, we can still have electricity and internet.
Me personally, I just want a lifestyle where I dont need to work crazy hours doing something I hate to pay rent, food etc. I would rather work serving a community doing something I enjoy (personally, bartending), and have a joint stress free lifestyle with the rest of the community.
What I imagine the begging being -
The first settles work together to build the main community center. This is where everyone stays for the beginning, with plumbing and cots. After a community center is built, they work to build simple homes. Earth bag, wood built, or even shipping crate. Small studio homes with the basics. After a while where there is community resources and things to do, then you can extend your home.
I just imagine working my days doing something I enjoy, and contributing to the community. After work I can go to the community center and chill with people, or go and play some basketball, or just go tend to my garden.
Just a thought, that do you guys think?
To sum up what I would love - I would love a community where everyone works together, and money isnt an issue. I dont have to worry about making rent. I just live my life with a close community around me.
A model of something that is actually done
I was forced to attend church until I was 14. When I turned 13, I was able to go on a 'mission trip' in west virginia where we help people in need.
We stayed at this farm, and the only charge to stay there was to work for them for a day. They had a motel, with 40 rooms, an awesome community center, football fields, basketball courts, and so much to do. EVERYTHING, the motels, the courts, the community center, was built by members of churches that stayed at their 'resort' while on a mission trip. They had a HUGE 6 door barn filled with tools, that were donated or left there. If everyone that lived there pitched in bringing their own tools, or buy some, it would be completely plausible. Only thing is we would want to be within 100 miles or so of a lumber yard.
I feel that if we work together, even with a small group, we can achieve something similar. With work, we can have a large community with a town bar (I would open up a town bar), restaurant, schools, etc. We also wouldnt have to worry about the medical issues of having an island, we would still be able to go to doctors, go to hospitals, etc.
Better yet, have it in canada or similar with universal healthcare
