Does the directional placement of resonators matter?

How does directional placement of high level resonators actually affect range, and/or shape of the portal circumference? If I have level 1 resonators everywhere, and I place a level 8 resonator facing north, is the fields egg shaped? Does it extend only north?

Edit: I'm not talking about the placement of them on the ground surrounding the portal. I'm asking about their field range. How many meters the field will be extended. Eight level 1 resonators will give you a radius of 160 meters in range. If you throw in one level 8 resonator, that radius becomes 1977 meters. Does the range only extend in the direction which the high level resonator is pointing, like an egg? Or is the range always circular?
