Am trying to draw a portrait for a friend, please help!

Am trying to draw a picture of my friend (curly haired) and myself (straight hair) for her christmas present but am having trouble having never done a portrait before. Any tips please? Anything that would work better? Using lead and graphite pencils on A3 drawing paper but am open to any medium suggestions.
