Resin on the lips

How far do you guys put the cigar in your mouth when you smoke? I find that when I just kinda kiss the cigar I get a bit of resin or something on my lips, which then ends up on my cup when I drink. Is it typical to put your lips past the cap? Also does the resin think only happen with certain cigars? I just noticed it today when smoking a maduro hoyo de monterrey.
