Mortal Kombat Armageddon Question

I'm not much of a gamer; my wife and I do have a Wii, but it's more of a "Netflix machine" than anything else. However, back in the day I enjoyed the Mortal Kombat games and was considering buying Mortal Kombat Armageddon as something fun for us to play.

Thing is, I'm not super-eager to try to play a fighting game by waving a Wii remote around. Can some of you folks familiar with the game save me the research and let me know my options?

1. Is it possible to play the game in a more traditional way, by holding the controller horizontally and using the buttons?

2. I'd also read somewhere that Gamecube controllers can be used; are there remote controllers (to avoid wires) available for the Gamecube that I could use with the Wii?

Any info would be helpful. Thanks!
